PUNE: Vegetables and foodgrains are on an upward spiral in the city, causing many a household to reorganise its monthly budget for food. As compared to last year, the price of vegetables like potatoes, cauliflower and fenugreek has gone up by Rs 30 to Rs 100 a kg in the wholesale market. At present, the retail prices of potatoes and cauliflower are around Rs 20 a kg, Shell Pendants Cheap followed by cabbage, tomatoes, green peas and fenugreek with a price of Rs 10 per kg or per bunch. The reason for the high prices are the interrupted rain patterns that the state witnessed this monsoon, which damaged the agricultural produce. Suvarna Inamdar, a homemaker said, "If this continues, the high prices are likely to prove a big burden. As consumers we have little option and the government hasn't even been formed yet." The usual pattern is that vegetables and foodgrain prices fall after the monsoon. The better the kharif season, the better the supply of vegetables and the lower the price of essential commodities. This year, however, this has not happened. Western Maharashtra and the districts near Pune the main suppliers of vegetables have had lower production figures, said a senior commission agent at the city-based Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC). Shailesh Kotmire, administrator at the APMC said, "Every year the demand for vegetables from Pune market increases, but the supply does not increase at the same rate. This results in higher prices. "Tur dal was between Rs 4,300 and Rs 4,450 a quintal on November 3, 2008, and today this has gone up to between Rs 7,000 and Rs 8,900 a quintal.
