PUNE: Vegetables and foodgrains are on an upward spiral in the city, causing many a household to reorganise its monthly budget for food. As compared to last year, the price of vegetables like potatoes, cauliflower and fenugreek has gone up by Rs 30 to Rs 100 a kg in the wholesale market. At present, the retail prices of potatoes and cauliflower are around Rs 20 a kg, Shell Pendants Cheap followed by cabbage, tomatoes, green peas and fenugreek with a price of Rs 10 per kg or per bunch. The reason for the high prices are the interrupted rain patterns that the state witnessed this monsoon, which damaged the agricultural produce. Suvarna Inamdar, a homemaker said, "If this continues, the high prices are likely to prove a big burden. As consumers we have little option and the government hasn't even been formed yet." The usual pattern is that vegetables and foodgrain prices fall after the monsoon. The better the kharif season, the better the supply of vegetables and the lower the price of essential commodities. This year, however, this has not happened. Western Maharashtra and the districts near Pune the main suppliers of vegetables have had lower production figures, said a senior commission agent at the city-based Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC). Shailesh Kotmire, administrator at the APMC said, "Every year the demand for vegetables from Pune market increases, but the supply does not increase at the same rate. This results in higher prices. While Shell Earrings Brooches vegetables have become much more expensive, foodgrains too have been slightly affected, especially Tur dal. "Tur dal was between Rs 4,300 and Rs 4,450 a quintal on November 3, 2008, and today this has gone up to between Rs 7,000 and Rs 8,900 a quintal. NEW ORLEANS -- The economic downturn couldn't overshadow the Mardi Gras revelry Tuesday as partiers jostled for beads on parade routes and the French Quarter swelled with boozy fun and masked crowds. Many revelers turned the tables on the recession, dressing in costumes riffing on bailouts, the stimulus package and busted budgets. The celebration was marred by violence after police said at least six people -- including an infant -- were shot on St. Charles Avenue, a historic parade route where families traditionally gather. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, and the celebrations went on. Suzanne Gravener, a 59-year-old New Orleans teacher, dressed as the Statue of Liberty -- without a crown. That, she joked, had to be sold for cash because of the hard times. Her Hip Hop Bracelets husband lost his job as a dairy salesman. "I still have my torch, though," she said, and Carnival was one luxury the family could afford. "This is the greatest free show on earth." The day started with clarinetist Pete Fountain leading his Half- Fast Walking Club into the streets, marking the unofficial opening of Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. By dawn, spectators crammed parade routes and costumed revelers mingled with all-night partiers in the French Quarter's narrow streets. The first parade of the day was Zulu, the traditional African- American parade, followed by Rex, the king of Carnival, and hundreds of truck floats. At 4 a.m., Zulu members got into costume, which for them means blackface, huge afro wigs and grass skirts. "If my Dog tag Jewellery family could see me now, the only good news is that they wouldn't recognize me," said Zulu member John Rice after his face was painted. "This is the only city in the world where you can get away with this." Hip Hop Stud EarringsMayor Ray Nagin rode on horseback dressed as what he called a "recovery gladiator" in honor of the city's rebuilding from Hurricane Katrina. Katrina was on the mind of Cherry Gilbert, a 42-year-old Seattle bus driver who helped organize a reunion for about 80 family members, many displaced to cities like Dallas and Atlanta by the 2005 storm. "This is the first time since Katrina we've all gathered here and it's a beautiful thing," Gilbert said. "There's nothing like New Orleans ... and family." Despite the economy, tourism officials hope to match last year's crowd of about 750,000. Before Katrina, Fat Tuesday typically brought in about 1 million people. Mardi Gras ends at midnight Tuesday. In heavily Catholic New Orleans, many revelers will be in church Wednesday to have ashes daubed on their foreheads as they begin 40 days of prayer, penitence and self-denial leading up to Easter. DANNY JOHANSON'S year one class is learning about inventions. Plastered on pieces of paper on a wall are their arguments about whether some inventions are essential. "You need clothes because Puma Espera Shoes Cheap if you didn't have clothes we would walk around naked. People would laugh and you would get freezing cold," one pupil wrote. A pupil argues that makeup is not needed: "You don't need makeup because it might not be good for you. You only wear it to weddings." Another writes that shoes are important because if he is playing in the mud without them his socks will get dirty. The 18 pupils listen closely as Mr Johanson explains that people invent items to meet a need or want. He prompts a pupil to retell the class the reason he gave for vacuum cleaners being invented. The shy boy pops his head up and quietly tells his classmates that vacuum cleaners get rid of dust. "If there is dust it will make you sneeze." During maths the class plays number cricket - boys versus girls. The five and six- year-olds' competitive streak is obvious. Each team rolls the dice five times and then adds up its total score. The boys start off quickly, with one of them rolling a five. Their hands all punch the air and they yell "yes". When it is the girls' turn things don't go quite so well. On the second turn, they roll a six, which means they are out. The boys punch the air again, the girls groan. But during their next turn the girls roll three fives, a three and a four. The boys look worried. By the end of the game the girls score 37 runs, a six-run victory. The boys are not happy. Mr Johanson continues the maths lesson by holding up his fingers to show a series of equations. He starts by holding up all 10 fingers and then puts down two. The lesson gets harder when he puts his hands behind his back and tells the class: "I am holding up six fingers and hold up three more fingers, but then put two down." They count together in twos from 12 to 24. "What can you notice about the numbers we just counted?" he asks the class. "They are all even," a smart cookie yells out. Cheap Jadeite jewelryMr Johanson asks someone to give him a number between 60 and 70. Someone suggests 62. The class is then asked how many 10s go into 62. To help the class get the answer, he gives a tin to six pupils and puts 10 plastic dinosaurs in each. The class works out the number of 10s and then the teacher adds two more dinosaurs to reach 62. The class splits up into five groups and they head away to do different maths exercises, depending on their ability. Mr Johanson starts working with one group using different- coloured blocks to make up numbers of more than 1000. In another group a pupil is trying to count out loud to 100 using an abacus. He gets to 17 and loses concentration. "Man, I was doing so well, but I mucked up," he tells a classmate. He starts again and this time makes it to 43 before losing count. Determined to count to 100, he has another go. He is doing well - 74, 75, 77. He pauses, confused about where he has gone wrong. He looks at the abacus, counts back a few numbers and realises he pushed two beads ov

CARB Votes to Keep R-134a Auto

California auto enthusiasts and consumers got the news late last month: The California Air Resources Board (CARB) voted in favor of adopting an alternative regulation that would keep automotive refrigerant-R-134a-available to Californians to recharge and service their vehicles' air conditioning system, wh眉e at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions by nearly half a million metric tons. The alternative regulation, proposed by the Automotive Refrigerant Products Institute (ARPI) and supported by the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) and the California Automotive Wholesalers' Association (CAWA), would Eveing dresses allow R-134a to continue to be sold in California and will require a self-sealing can top, enhanced can labeling, a used-can deposit and return program and a consumer education campaign. Steel Lovers Jewelry"What began more than two years ago as an effort to restrict sales and do-it-yourself use of the refrigerant R- 134a has resulted in CARB working with the leading companies and automotive aftermarket trade associations to craft a new four-tiered 'hybrid' mitigation plan that will allow the continued sale of refrigerants in the California market while ensuring proper handling and disposal," said Tom Brown, president of ARPI. Wholesale Body JewelryThis effort follows on a previous orderly transition from R-12, the earlier automotive refrigerant, in widespread use until it was found to be an ozone-depleting substance. While the replacement R-134a is not an ozone-depleting substance, it is a high "global warming potential" (GWP) gas, with a GWP of 1300 (where carbon dioxide has a GWP of 1). The automotive industry led the transition then and is on the eve of a new transition as lower GWP refrigerants are prepared for market. Until that time, the industry is committed to the four-tiered program voted on by CARB. Christian Louboutin ShoesChristian Louboutin Shoes Card-check 'third way' gets co

WASHINGTON - Supporters of a compromise proposal on a bill that makes it easier to form unions said Sunday they are not deterred by the frosty reception the plan has received from labor and business groups. Three prominent retailers - Starbucks Corp., Costco Wholesale Corp. and Whole Foods Corp. - broke with other business leaders over the weekend to offer a "third way," which they hope can bridge the bitter divide over the Employee Free Choice Act. Wholesale clothing"Our role is to trigger a conversation between business and labor to try to find common ground on the principle of a level playing field," the companies' attorney Lanny Davis told reporters in a conference call. Most business groups quickly condemned the proposal as a nonstarter, while labor officials said it falls short of what unions want. "No proposal that makes it easier for employers and union bosses to impose forced unionism on workers is acceptable," said Doug Stafford, vice president of the National Right to Work Committee, which opposes the bill. And Democratic leaders denounced the new plan on Sunday as "unacceptable." "It is nothing more than a classic Washington lobbying campaign intended to confuse the issues and disguise the real agenda of maintaining the status quo," said a joint statement from Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., and Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa. Single strand necklace CheapThey are the lead sponsors of the bill, also known as "card check." Passage of the bill is the top priority of labor officials who say the system is heavily tilted against union organizers. The measure backed by unions and most Democrats would allow a majority of employees at a company to organize by signing cards, a change from the current practice that allows employers to require secret ballot elections. It also would increase penalties on companies that retaliate against workers seeking to organize and call for arbitration if management and the union cannot agree on a first contract. Starbucks, Costco and Whole Foods would let management keep the right to secret ballot elections and would not include binding arbitration. But the companies' plan also expands penalties, allows unions access to employees during nonworking hours and mandates a fixed time for elections so companies can't delay the process. AFL-CIO legislative director Bill Samuel said the federation could not accept removal of majority sign-up and arbitration provisions. Davis said about two dozen Senate staffers briefed on the new plan "have welcomed our approach - some enthusiastically, some moderately, but not a single one said, 'Don't do this.'" He blamed much of the initially hostile reaction to a "disinformation campaign" launched by some anti-card-check forces who oppose any compromise. The House is ready to pass card check, and the proposal is believed to have majority support in the Senate. But an expected GOP filibuster would require 60 votes to move the bill forward in the Senate, a 925 Sterling Silver Jewelry hurdle the bill may not overcome. President Obama has said he wants Congress to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, but he's also signaled a willingness to hear out offers of compromise. Soy sauce has become an integral part of all our kitchens today. Cufflinks JewelryIts flavour is hard to beat, in fact it is magical - it has the ability to rescue many dishes that would otherwise be disastrous! This sauce was discovered in China more than 2,500 years ago, and is believed to be one of the oldest condiments. This is how the story goes - it is believed that during the 6th century, when Buddhism became popular in Japan and China, vegetarianism created the need for a meatless seasoning. What they used was a salty paste of fermented grain - the first known product to resemble the modern day soy sauce! A Japanese priest, studying in China then, came across this new seasoning. On his return to Japan, he improved on this sauce, and over the years, the Japanese modified the ingredients and its brewing techniques. The main change was the addition of wheat in equal proportion to the soybeans. This resulted in a sauce with a perfectly balanced flavour profile that enhanced other foods without over-powering them. Although there are many types of soy sauce, all are salty and earthy tasting brownish liquids used to season food while cooking or at the table. Soy sauce forms an important part of many cuisines. Different countries make different soy sauces, and it is rarely appropriate to substitute, say, Chinese soy sauce for Japanese soy sauce which is known as shoyu. The English name soy came from soi in the Satsuma dialect of Japanese. Soy sauce comes in two varieties - 'light soy sauce', which is a thin light-brown liquid, and 'dark soy sauce', which is the same thing only with caramel added for colouring and thickening. Dark soy sauce is used when it is desired that the dish be coloured, or as a dipping sauce. Cinnabar JewelryThere are basically two distinct types of soy sauce available today - the naturally-brewed or fermented sauce and the non-brewed sauce. The naturally-brewed soy sauce is transparent with a light colour and a wonderfully balanced flavour and aroma. The non- brewed soy sauce is basically opaque with a harsh overpowering flavour and a distinct chemical smell. When cooking with naturally-brewed soy sauce, you'll realise that this is more than just any flavouring. It has an amazing flavour that adds a depth and richness to all kinds of foods from burgers to fresh salads. I love using soy sauce in marinades and dressings. Here are a few that are tried and tested: Eggplant in sesame soy sauce Ingredients: 2 long eggplants; 2 tblsps soy sauce; 1-2 tblsp olive oil; 1 tsp vinegar; ? tsp dried red chilli powder; 1 tsp grated fresh ginger; 1 tsp finely chopped garlic; 1 tsp sugar; 1 tsp toasted white sesame seeds Method: Trim off the stem end of the eggplants. Cut them crosswise into pieces about 2 inches in length. Then place the eggplant slices onto a steamer rack and steam over medium-high heat until they are cooked through but still a bit firm or else they will become mushy. While the eggplants are steaming, make the sauce by combining soy sauce, olive oil, vinegar, ground dried chillies, garlic, ginger and sugar. Stir well to blend flavours. Remove the eggplants from the steamer and slice each piece in half lengthwise and each half again into 2-3 long strips. Arrange the pieces in a single layer on a serving plate. The award is in recognition for her services to business. Mrs Walker, who is the managing director of the firm, has had to keep the news under her hat for nearly two months. She said: "I am just thrilled. It's so wonderful that someone running a small business can be recognised in this way. "My reaction was one of amazement and disbelief because I have not done anything special -- I have just been doing my job." Mrs Walker started her dance supply business with a Pounds 50 loan from her mum and an industrial sewing machine. ShoulderMore than 30 years later and Mrs Walker, who lives with her husband Ian in Holcombe, has a company with a Pounds 7million turnover and celebrating a prestigious award. IDS boasts clients across 40 countries, and employs 60 staff at its headquarters at Harlequin House. Mrs Walker said: "I never thought it would get to this stage. The business had tiny beginnings. I had a dance school and I used to make leotards for my students. "I didn't think I would end up with such a fantastic business or the 60 staff I have got." She added: "I feel very strongly that this award is not about me but about the business and that's thanks to the support of my husband and the team of staff I have had over the years." Meanwhile, a Dartington man has been appointed OBE in today's honours list in recognition of services to the community. William Little, 87, from Orchard Park, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to the community. Mr Little, said he thought his son was 'a bit involved' with the nomination, although a friend in Portsmouth also said a few years ago he should be recognised for the work he has done in Dartington.
