FORMER city taxi driver Craig Payne has made an emotional plea to his attackers to give themselves up to the police -- 14 years after he was brutally stabbed.

He said he wants to stir their consciences as he faces his own ordeal against cancer.

The 48-year-old father of two from Exwick was stabbed in the neck by two men in their early twenties in 1996.

He had taken them to Stoke Canon in his cab when they set on him after refusing to pay a fare of Pounds 6.30. They then fled and were never found, despite a police hunt.

Then Mr Payne was delivered further blows -- suffering a double heart attack and now cancer of the oesophagus.

He is due to have surgery at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth next week.

Mr Payne said he will never forgive his attackers for what they did.

But he said he hopes they find out about his own personal battle with cancer and show the same courage as he is, by coming forward and owning up to the stabbing.

"The men stabbed me with a something sharp. I don't know whether it was a knife or scissors," he said.

"They had refused to pay the fair and because it was a London cab which locks the doors when you put on the brake, they couldn't get out at first so they stabbed me.

"I want them to confess to what they did and face the consequences.

"This attack altered my life, though I don't think it caused my cancer.

"I want them wholesale lingerie to reflect on what they did and admit their crime.

"I realised at the time that I was in a no-win situation."

He said he remains positive about the operation and it follows a period undergoing chemotherapy.

"I will get through this," he vowed. "It will take me six months of recovery and so far I have received hundreds of messages from well wishers." His wife Juliet, 43, has been raising money for the city-based cancer charity Force.

With help from personal trainer Nathan Hind who volunteered to help, she and elder daughter Victoria have raised money with a sponsored slim.

They have appealed through Action Echo for people to help by sponsoring them. Mrs Payne, who now weighs just over 11 stone, said: "Craig completed his chemo three weeks ago.
