from BERNAMA, The Malaysian National News Agency BEIJING, July 5 (Bernama) -- The population of China is projected to reach 1.39 billion by the end of 2015, with 700 million of them living in the urban areas.

"Based on the present momentum, the population growth rate will continue to rise in the 12th five-year plan period (2011-2015). However, it will be on a downward trend after this period," Li Bin, director of the National Population and Family Planning Commission was quoted as saying at the China Population Association's annual conference in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province.

She said, China's population growth was expected to go through a major transitional stage, during which it would see a turning point in labour dependency ratio where the working population (age 15-59) would begin to decline after reaching its height.

Li said during this period, the ageing population would increase from 4.8 million to eight million annually, and it was forecast that by the end of 2015, those aged over 60 would be more than 200 million.

"During this period, we will also see drastic changes in the demography, where urban population will surpass rural population for the first time. The urban pulation will be over 700 million.

"Those born after 1980's will form the larger part of the migrant population, where migration will be very active in the second tier cities." According to a report, in 2009, 606.67 million of the country's 1.32 billion people were urban dwellers, while the remaining 721.35 million were rural inhabitants.

The urbanisation rate was 46.7 per cent in 2009 and is expected to reach 50 per cent in 2012.

China's population was 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, about 2.5 times the size in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded.
