religion. The Reform Synagogue, though a centre of culture and prosperity, was cold, crude and devoid of magnetism. Half a century of stagnant reform and restless dissolution had left Orthodoxy still the Established Doxy. For, as Orthodoxy evaporated in England, it was replaced by fresh streams from Russia, to be evaporated and replaced in turn, England acting as an automatic distillery. Thus the Rabbinate still reigned, though it scarcely governed either the East End or the West. For the East End formed a Federation of the smaller synagogues to oppose the dominance of the United Synagogue, importing a minister of superior orthodoxy from Sharks Jerseys the Continent, and the _Flag_ had powerful leaders on the great struggle between plutocracy and democracy, and the voice of Mr. Henry Goldsmith was heard on behalf of Whitechapel. And the West, in so far as it had spiritual aspirations, fed them on non-Jewish literature and the higher thought of the age. The finer spirits, indeed, were groping for a purpose and a destiny, doubtful even, if the racial isolation they perpetuated were not an anachronism. While the community had been battling for civil and religious liberty, there had been a unifying, almost spiritualizing, influence in the sense of common injustice, and the question _cui bono_ had been postponed. Drowning men do not ask if life is worth living. Later, the Russian persecutions came to interfere again with national introspection, sending a powerful wave of racial sympathy round the earth. In England a backwash of the wave left the Asmonean Society, wherein, for the first time in history, Jews gathered with nothing in common save blood--artists, lawyers, writers, doctors--men who in pre-emancipation times might Dany Heatley Jersey have become Christians like Heine, but who now formed an effective protest against the popular conceptions of the Jew, and a valuable antidote to the disproportionate notoriety achieved by less creditable types. At the Asmonean Society, brilliant free-lances, each thinking himself a solitary exception to a race of bigots, met one another in mutual astonishment. Raphael alienated several readers by uncompromising approval of this characteristically modern movement. Another symptom of the new intensity Joe Thornton Jersey of national brotherhood was the attempt towards amalgamating the Spanish and German communities, but brotherhood broke down under the disparity of revenue, the rich Spanish sect displaying once again the exclusiveness which has marked its history. Amid these internal problems, the unspeakable immigrant was an added thorn. Very often the victim of Continental persecution was assisted on to America, but the idea that he was hurtful to native labor rankled in the minds Patrick Marleau Jersey of Englishmen, and the Jewish leaders were anxious to remove it, all but proving him a boon. In despair, it was sought to 'anglicize him by discourses in Yiddish. With the Poor Alien question was connected the return to Palestine. The Holy Land Jonathan Cheechoo Jersey League still pinned its faith to Zion, and the _Flag_ was with it to the extent of preferring the ancient

the morning I was aroused by a somewhat hefty banging on the door.""What!""A banging at the door," repeated Psmith. "There, standing on the mat, were three policemen. From their remarks I gathered that certain bright spirits had been running a gambling establishment in the lower regions of the building--where, I think I told you, there is a saloon--and the Law was now about to clean up the place. Very cordially the honest fellows invited me to go with them. A conveyance, it seemed, waited in the street without. I pointed out, even as you appear to have done, that sea-green pyjamas with old rose frogs were not the costume in which a Shropshire Psmith should be seen abroad in one of the world's greatest cities; but they assured me--more by their manner than their words--that my misgivings were out of place, so I yielded. These men, I told myself, have lived longer in New York than I. They know what is done and what is not done. I will bow to their views. So I went with them, and after a very pleasant Flyers Jersey and cosy little ride in the patrol waggon, arrived at the police station. This morning I chatted a while with the courteous magistrate, convinced him by means of arguments and by silent evidence of my open, honest face and unwavering eye that I was not a professional gambler, and came away without a stain on my character."Billy Windsor listened to this narrative with growing interest."Gum! it's them!" he cried."As Comrade Maloney would say," said Psmith, "meaning what, Comrade Windsor?""Why, the fellows who are after that paper. Benjamin stared at him with wide, unrecognizing eyes. "_Nu_, how goes it, Benjamin?" cried Moses in Yiddish, with mock heartiness. "Thank you, old Four-Eyes. It's very good of you to come. I always said there mustn't be any hits at you in the paper. I always told the fellows you were a very decent chap." "What says he?" asked Moses, turning to the company. "I cannot understand English." They could not understand his own question, but the matron guessed it. She tapped her forehead and shook her head for reply. Benjamin closed his eyes and there was silence. Presently he opened them and looked straight at his father. A deeper crimson mantled on the flushed cheek as Benjamin beheld the dingy stooping being to whom he owed birth. Moses wore a dirty red scarf below his untrimmed beard, his clothes were greasy, his face had not yet been Sharks Jerseys washed, and--for a climax--he had not removed his hat, which other considerations than those of etiquette should have impelled him to keep out of sight. "I thought you were old Four-Eyes," the boy murmured in confusion--"Wasn't he here just now?" "Go and fetch Mr. Coleman," said the matron, to the nurse, half-smiling through tears at her own knowledge of the teacher's nickname and wondering what endearing term she was herself known by. "Cheer up, Benjamin," said his father, seeing his boy had become sensible of his presence. "Thou wilt be all right soon. Thou hast been much worse than this." "What does he say?" asked Benjamin, turning his eyes towards the matron. "He says he is sorry to see you so bad," said the matron, at a venture. "But Dany Heatley Jersey I shall be up soon, won't I? I can't have _Our Own_ delayed," whispered Martin Havlat Jersey Benjamin. "Don't worry about _Our Own_, my poor boy," murmured the matron, pressing his forehead. He looked at the doctor, and the doctor's eye told him all. "Ah, Mr. Coleman," said Benjamin, with joyous huskiness, "you'll see that _Our Own_ comes out this week as usual. Tell Jack Simmonds he must not forget to rule black lines around the page containing Bruno's epitaph. Bony-nose--I--I mean Mr. Bernstein, wrote it for us in dog-Latin. Isn't it a lark? I'll see to it," old Four-Eyes assured him with answering huskiness. "What says he?" helplessly inquired Moses, addressing himself to the newcomer. "Isn't it a sad case, Mr. Coleman?" said the matron, in a low tone. The tide was too strong for him. He was not a graceful loser; but he got through this, and the Virginian eased him down by treating him precisely like the others--apparently. Possibly the supreme--the most American--moment of all was when word came that the bridge was open, and the Pullman trains, with noise and triumph, began to move westward at last. Every one waved farewell to every one, craning from steps and windows, so that the cars twinkled with hilarity; and in twenty minutes the whole procession in front had moved, and our turn came."Last chance for Rawhide," said the Virginian."Last chance for Sunk Creek," said a reconstructed mutineer, and all sprang aboard. There was no question who had won his spurs now.Our caboose trundled on to Billings along the shingly cotton-wooded Yellowstone; and as the plains and bluffs and the distant snow began to grow well known, even to me, we turned to our baggage that was to come off, since camp would begin in the morning. Thus I saw the Virginian carefully rewrapping Kenilworth, that he might bring it to its owner unharmed; and I said, "Don't you think you could have played poker with Queen Elizabeth?""No; I expaict she'd have beat me," he replied. "She was a lady."It was at Billings, on this day, that I made those reflections about David Freese Jersey equality. He was earnest and charitable (except in religious wrangles, when he was earnest and uncharitable), and knew himself a pillar of the community, an Victor Cruz Jersey exemplar to the drones and sluggards who shirked Giants Jersey their share of public burdens and were callous to the dazzlement of communal honors. "Of course it was written for money, Monty," his brother, Percy Saville, the stockbroker, reminded him. "What else do authors write for? It's the way they earn their living." Strangers found difficulty in understanding the fraternal relation of Percy Saville and Montagu Samuels; and did not readily grasp that Percy Saville was an Anglican version of Pizer Samuels, more in tune with the handsome well-dressed personality it denoted. Montagu had stuck loyally to his colors, but Pizer had drooped under the burden of carrying his patronymic through the theatrical and artistic circles he favored after business hours. Of such is the brotherhood of Israel. "The whole book's written with gall," went on Percy Saville, emphatically. "I suppose the man couldn't Ahmad Bradshaw Jersey get into good Jewish houses, and he's revenged himself by slandering them." "Then he ought to have got into good Jewish houses," said Sidney. "The man has talent, nobody can deny that, and if he couldn't get into good Jewish society because he didn't have money enough, isn't that proof enough his picture is true?" "I don't deny that there are people among us who make money the one open sesame to their houses," said Mrs. Henry Goldsmith, magnanimously. "Deny it, indeed? Money is the open sesame to everything," rejoined Sidney Graham, delightedly scenting an opening for a screed. He liked to talk bomb-shells, and did not often get pillars of the community to shatter. "Money manages the schools and the charities, and the synagogues, and indirectly controls the press. A small body of persons--always the same--sits on all councils, on all Antrel Rolle Jersey boards! Why? Because they pay the piper." "Well, sir, and is not that a good reason?" asked Montagu Samuels. "The community is to be congratulated on having a few public-spirited men left in days when there are wealthy German Jews in our midst who not only disavow Judaism, but refuse to support its Giants Customized Jersey institutions. Her father's face, in its frame of entreaty, trouble, unrest, hung between her and the hills, so that, for a time, she saw nothing but Madeira. Little by little, however, the hills themselves became insistent. They were very beautiful, a long, massed glory of colour, red Hakeem Nicks Jersey and gold and green, all looped about by the silver cord of the Di. As the girl watched, a lone horseman came out of one of the wooded knobs and galloped down Plaxico Burress Jersey the ridge road toward Canaan. She could see him plainly, his breadth of shoulders, his high-headedness, his good horsemanship. She got up quickly, swaying toward the window, her hands over her heart, with the strange little pushing gesture, as though she must push her heart down. The horseman went on down the road toward Canaan. "Oh!" cried the girl presently, pleadingly, "if I may see him just once Giants Jersey! If I just don't have to lose him all at once!" She ran then across the room to another window, through which she whistled shrilly at the negro man dozing in the succulent grass in front of the stable. "Samson!" she shouted, "saddle Ribbon the quickest you ever did in your life!" And when she Steve Smith Jersey saw that the negro had roused sufficiently to execute her commands, she turned from the window hurriedly, went to her clothes-closet hurriedly, changed her house gown for a riding-habit hurriedly, and was out in the yard at the mounting block as the saddle mare was led up from the stable. All the way she was talking to Madeira, almost praying to him. His face with its trouble and pain still moved before her. "Ah, but you will forgive me!" she Justin Tuck Jersey was saying to it. realized.I remember my first day at Radcliffe. It was a day full of interest for me. I had looked forward to it for years. A potent force within me, stronger than the persuasion of my friends, stronger even than the pleadings of my heart, had impelled me to try my strength by the standards of those who see and hear. I knew that there were obstacles in the way; but I was eager to overcome them. I had taken to heart the words of the wise Roman who said, "To be banished from Rome is but to live outside of Rome." Debarred from the great highways of knowledge, I was compelled to make the journey across country by unfrequented roads--that was all; and I knew that in college there were many bypaths where I could touch hands with girls who were thinking, loving and struggling like me.I began my studies with eagerness. Before me I saw a new world opening in beauty and light, and I felt within me the capacity to know all things. In the wonderland of Mind I should be as free as another. Its people, scenery, manners, joys, tragedies should be living, tangible interpreters of the real world. The lecture-halls seemed filled with the spirit of the great and the wise, and I thought the professors were the embodiment of wisdom. If I have since learned differently, I am not going to tell anybody. But I soon discovered that college was not quite the romantic lyceum I had imagined. Many of the dreams that had delighted my young inexperience became beautifully less and "faded into the Charles Woodson Jersey light of common day." Gradually I began to find that there were disadvantages in going to college. The one I felt and still feel most is lack of time. I used to have time to think, to reflect, my mind and I. We would sit together of an evening and listen to the inner melodies of the spirit, which one hears only in leisure moments when the words John Kuhn Jersey of some loved poet touch a deep, sweet chord in the soul that until then had been silent. But in college there is no time to commune with one's thoughts. One goes to college to learn, it seems, not to think. When one enters the portals of learning, one leaves the dearest pleasures--solitude, books and imagination--outside with the whispering pines. I suppose I ought to find some comfort in the thought that I am laying up treasures for future enjoyment, but I am improvident enough to prefer present joy to hoarding riches against a rainy day.My studies the first year were French, German, Aaron Kampman Jersey history, English composition and English literature. In the French course I read some of the works of Corneille, Moliere, Racine, Alfred de Musset and Sainte-Beuve, and B.J. Raji Jersey in the German those of Goethe and Schiller. I A.J. Hawk Jersey reviewed rapidly the whole period of history from the fall of the Roman Empire to the eighteenth century, and in English literature studied critically Milton's poems and "Areopagitica."I am frequently asked how I overcome the peculiar conditions under which I work in college. In the classroom I am of course practically alone. The professor is as remote as if he were speaking through a telephone. The lectures are spelled into

in the Phoenix Park. His patience and amiabilitywere boundless; and under his guidance I soon learnt thetricks of my trade. During the session we remained in London; and for some timeit was of great interest to listen to the debates. WhenIrish business was before the House, I had often to be inattendance on my chief in the reporters' gallery. SometimesI had to wait there for an hour or two before our questionscame on, and thus had many opportunities of hearing Bright,Gladstone, Disraeli, and all the leading speakers. After atime the pleasure, when compulsory, began to pall; and I usedto wonder what on earth could induce the ruck to waste theirtime in following, sheeplike, their bell-wethers, or wastetheir money in paying for that honour. When Parliament wasup we moved to Dublin. I lived with Horsman in the ChiefSecretary's lodge. And as I had oft Wes Welker Jersey en stayed at CastleHoward before Lord Carlisle became Viceroy, between the twolodges I saw a great deal of pleasant society. Amongst those who came to stay with Horsman was SidneyHerbert, then Colonial Secretary, a man of singular nobilityof nature. Another Jerod Mayo Jersey celebrity for the day, but of a verydifferent character, was Lord Cardigan. He had just returnedfrom the Crimea, and was now in command of the forces inIreland. This was about six months after the Balaklavacharge. Horsman asked him one evening to give a descriptionof it, with a plan of the battle. His Lordship did so; nowords could be more suited to the deed. If this was 'pell-mell, havock, and confusion,' the account of it wasproportionately confounded. The noble leader scrawled andinked and blotted all the phases of the battle upon the samescrap of paper, till the batteries were at the starting-pointof the charge, the Light Brigade on the far side of the guns, and all the points of the compass, attack and defence, hadchanged their original places; in fact, the gallant Earlbrandished his pen as valiantly as he had Rob Gronkowski Jersey his sword. Whenquite bewildered, like everybody else, I ventured mildly toask, 'But where were you, Lord Cardigan, and where were ourmen when it came to this?' 'Where? Where? God bless my soul! How should I kn BenJarvus Green Ellis Jersey ow whereanybody was?' And this, no doubt, described the situation toa nicety. My office was in the Castle, and the next room to mine wasthat of the Solicitor-General Keogh, afterwards Judge. Webecame the greatest of friends. It was one of Horsman'speculiarities to do business circuitously. He was fond ofmysteries and of secrets, secrets that were to be kept fromeveryone, but which were generally known to the officemessengers. When Keogh and I met in the mo Devin McCourty Jersey rning he wouldsay, with admirable imitation of Horsman's manne Chad Ochocinco Jersey r, 'Well, itis all settled; the Viceroy has considered the question, andhas decided to act upon my advice.
